A Day in The Life...

Welcome to a day in the life of a first grader in Mrs. Allen's class!

Morning Math

When students come into the classroom each morning they each complete a calendar job.  We rotate the calendar jobs each day.  After students complete their job we focus on math by either completing seat work or playing math fluency or strategy games with a partner.

 Reading and Daily Five:

Reading beings with a whole group lesson on phonics, high frequency words, comprehension and/or vocabulary.  Student practice individual skills through During Daily Five. The student's Daily Five choices are Independent, Listening to Reading, Partner Reading, Word Work, and Writing.

Partner:  Student practice fluency, reading strategies and comprehension during Partner Reading.

Word Work:  During Word Work students focus on practicing our weekly focus words along with past focus words.  They do this through sand writing, magnets, wiki sticks, sorting words, reading words through a variety games and word family work.  Students document the words they practice by writing them in their reading notebooks as they go.

Listening:  The students are allowed to choose listening on the computer, listening on the iPad or listening to books on the cd player.

These students are using their reading notebook to document their learning during Listening on the iPad!

Students also bring their reading notebooks to our group meetings to share their learning with each other!

During Daily Five students also work in small groups with Mrs. Allen focusing on our weekly focus words, high frequency words, comprehension and reading strategies!

During writing time the students are able to use a variety of classroom resources to help them spell words.  They enjoy using our classroom dictionaries, the word wall and their personal word collector pages to help them spell unknown words.
